When should I enroll in Medicare?

You can enroll in Medicare at anytime after age 65. 

However, if you have a qualifying illness or disability, you may be able to enroll sooner.

Should I speak to a Medicare agent before I turn 65? 

Yes, you should, speaking to a Medicare expert can help you avoid costly Medicare mistakes.

I thought Medicare enrollment was automatic, is that true?

No,  Medicare is only automatic if you're disabled, activate your Social Security benefit, or if you have Lou Gehrig's disease or end-stage Renal disease. 

I've heard there is a penalty if I don't sign up at 65. Is that true?

You will not incur a penalty, if you have had large employer group coverage with no break since age 65.
